Why people recommend it
Gong This Book! The Uncensored History of Television's Wildest Talent Show by Adam Nedeff is a non-fiction chronicle exploring the chaotic behind-the-scenes reality of a cult-classic television program. On the podcast Stuff You Should Know, host Josh Clark addressed the book during an episode titled The Catacombs of Paris, which aired on February 4, 2025. Clark shared feedback from a listener named Mike Burger, who had written into the show to correct a historical error the hosts previously made regarding the Gong Show. Within the message, Burger expressed his hope that the podcast hosts had utilized Gong This Book as one of their primary research sources. The listener emphasized that the text was written by a real-life television historian named Adam Nedeff, whose expertise made the publication an authoritative guide on the subject. By sharing this listener correspondence, Clark acknowledged the value of specialized historical literature and highlighted the meticulous research required to accurately document the eccentric history of vintage television entertainment and unconventional variety shows.
