Why people recommend it
Gomer Goof Vol. 6: Gomer by André Franquin is a classic European comic book featuring the iconic, well-meaning office troublemaker whose inventive laziness creates humorous chaos in a workplace setting. Manu Cornet recommended this comic series while appearing on The Pragmatic Engineer podcast in February 2025 during a discussion centered on his work as a Big Tech cartoonist. Cornet explained to English-speaking listeners that while the series is immensely famous throughout Europe, it has historically enjoyed less widespread recognition in the United States, though quality English translations are actively being published. The recommendation provided a delightful cultural bridge, introducing the rich tradition of Franco-Belgian comics to a technology-focused audience accustomed to technical manuals and business literature. Cornet's nod to the series highlighted the enduring appeal of clever visual humor and character-driven storytelling. By sharing his appreciation for Franquin's classic creation, the conversation offered listeners a refreshing glimpse into the artistic influences and comedic sensibilities that inspire prominent cartoonists working within the modern technology sector.
