Why people recommend it
Full Collected Works, T. 10. 2 by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky represents a comprehensive volume of speculative fiction from the renowned Soviet-era author duo. On the Lex Fridman Podcast, during episode 147 released on December 20, 2020, guest Dmitri Dolgov brought up the broader works of the Strugatsky brothers while chatting with host Lex Fridman about science fiction, artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving. Although referencing specific stories contained within their broader output such as Beetle in an Anthill, Hard to Be a God, and Monday Starts on Saturday, Dolgov praised the authors for moving far beyond standard genre conventions. He explained that their science fiction is deeply concerned with fascinating interpersonal relationships and profound societal questions, making it much more than typical space adventure. Furthermore, Dolgov highlighted the distinct literary style of the brothers, pointing out that some of the language used throughout their stories is completely hilarious. By recommending these collected works and specific tales, Dolgov pointed toward a rich tradition of philosophical science fiction that blends sharp social commentary, ethical interrogation, and rich humor into enduring literary creations that continue to captivate thoughtful readers and scientists alike.
