Why people recommend it
Engine of Inequality by Karen Petrou is an economic analysis examining how central bank policies, particularly those of the Federal Reserve, widen the wealth gap and disproportionately benefit the wealthy at the expense of ordinary citizens. On an episode of All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg titled Scott Bessent: Fixing the Fed, Tariffs for National Security, Solving Affordabil, released on December 22, 2025, Secretary Scott Bessent appeared as a guest to discuss monetary policy and national economics. During the interview, Bessent brought up Karen Petrou's book to illustrate his analytical points about the unintended consequences of quantitative easing and loose monetary interventions. Although noting that Petrou's political leanings lean center-left and do not align with his own, Bessent praised the publication as a fantastic work. He explicitly cited the book's title, Engine of Inequality, while explaining how prolonged central bank interventions continually pushed up asset prices, thereby exacerbating financial disparities across American society. The reference provided listeners with a cross-ideological endorsement of a critical economic text that challenges conventional financial orthodoxy and questions the equity of modern central banking practices during periods of prolonged economic volatility, market intervention, and wealth concentration.
