I think it was early 2000s a guy named kevin gilmartin wrote a book called it's like emotional survival for law enforcement officers and their families that's probably not exactly right but that's close best book i've ever read on police mental health.
The best things said about it
It's by uh Kevin M. Gilmartin, PhD. He's an ex- cop um who got a PhD in neuroscience and studies studied cops brains and got to see how they function. And he's the one that kind of coined this whole hypervigilance cycle.
Why people recommend it
Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement by Kevin M. Gilmartin is a specialized resource examining the psychological tolls, mental health challenges, and hypervigilance cycles experienced by police officers and their families. Alexander Williams recommended the book on an episode of Behind the Bastards in December 2021, explaining that the author is a former police officer who earned a doctorate in neuroscience to study the functioning of law enforcement brains and coin the concept of the hypervigilance cycle. Nancy Panza similarly recommended the book on The Joe Rogan Experience in July 2020, praising it as the finest work she had ever encountered regarding police mental health and the distinct psychological pressures tied to law enforcement careers.
