The book Depraved also notes that psychics pledged to aid in the efforts to no effect obviously along with an inventor who arrived with what he called a mechanical blood hound.
Why people recommend it
Depraved by Harold Schechter is a true crime historical account detailing the horrific crimes of America's first serial killer, H.H. Holmes, and the Chicago World's Fair. On Stuff They Don't Want You To Know, Ben Bowlin cited the book as a personal favorite while searching for trivia at the end of an episode. On Behind the Bastards, Robert Evans repeatedly drew from the text to detail various historical aspects of the search for victims and the bizarre figures who offered assistance, such as psychics and inventors arriving with mechanical bloodhounds. Evans also read directly from the book to recount an anecdote about Albert Fish Jr. playing football as a child, and cited the volume for the sensational media nicknames given to Albert Fish during his trial, such as the ogre of murder lodge and the werewolf of wisteria. Through these podcast discussions, the book functioned as a primary historical source for understanding notorious early American murderers and the lurid media coverage that followed them. The narrative highlights the darker elements of American history, showcasing how society and law enforcement reacted to unprecedented horrors during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

“This made Albert Jr. recall an incident in 1922 when he was playing football with his two brothers. Uh, here's how Deprave describes it. Albert had just bent down to catch a low kick. Albert the the younger, not the murderer.”
“uh depraved. The book notes that a single article in the mirror called fish the ogre of murder lodge, the vampire man, an orgastic fiend, and the werewolf of wisteria. Uh all in the same article.”
