Why people recommend it
Defying Hitler by Sebastian Haffner is a powerful biographical work that chronicles the rise of Nazi Germany from the perspective of an eyewitness living through the terrifying transformation of European society. On an episode of The Rubin Report titled Glenn Beck on Midterm Elections and the Future of Politics, broadcast on October 17, 2018, Glenn Beck strongly urged his listeners to read this specific historical account. He described the text as the finest explanation ever written regarding the catastrophic events that unfolded in Germany during that dark historical epoch. Beck emphasized that Haffner originally wrote the manuscript as a direct and urgent warning directed at Western societies to recognize the insidious creeping dangers of political radicalization and societal decay. By revisiting these harrowing observations, readers are forced to confront the fragile nature of democratic institutions and the dangerous appeal of authoritarianism during periods of intense political polarization. Beck hoped that sharing this perspective would awaken the public to historical patterns that continue to threaten modern political stability across the globe today.
