Why people recommend it

Classified by David E. Bernstein is an insightful historical examination that uncovers the hidden and often overlooked complexities of racial categorization and identity politics in the United States. During an appearance on The Ezra Klein Show, Stephen Kotkin was asked for a reading recommendation and immediately pointed listeners toward Bernstein's work. Kotkin highlighted the publication as the untold story of racial classification in America, praising its ability to reveal surprising historical realities that challenge conventional modern narratives. By endorsing the title, Kotkin drew attention to how bureaucratic definitions of race have evolved over time and shaped American society in unexpected ways. The recommendation served to underscore the importance of rigorous historical inquiry when attempting to understand the deep-rooted origins of contemporary social structures, legal definitions, and cultural identities within the United States.
