Why people recommend it
Civilization 2 by Sid Meier is a classic turn-based strategy video game that challenges players to build and manage empires across thousands of years of human history. On the podcast Timcast IRL, host Tim Pool recommended the game during an episode titled Trump PARDONS Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht w/Dominik Tarczynski & Thomas Massie, which aired on January 22, 2025. While discussing education, history, and historical strategy simulations, Pool wanted to give a public shout-out to Sid Meier's Civilization 2, asking his co-hosts and guests if they had ever played it. Pool enthusiastically recommended the title for all children to play, emphasizing its educational value even though the game is quite old. He specifically credited the software with helping him learn about significant historical movements, noting that he first learned about the Polish solidarity movement through playing Civilization 2. Through this recommendation, Pool highlighted how vintage interactive entertainment can serve as an engaging gateway to understanding complex political histories, global economics, and international relations for younger generations of players.
