Why people recommend it
Book of the Dead by Foy Scalf is an academic exploration of ancient Egyptian funerary texts and religious beliefs surrounding the afterlife, the underworld, and the journey of the soul. On an episode of Timcast IRL broadcast on March 27, 2025, guest Ian Crossland referenced the ancient Egyptian underworld beneath the pyramids, noting that souls traveled there and specifically mentioning the Book of the Dead when discussing these mythological traditions. In another podcast appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience in June 2024, host Joe Rogan and his guest Brian Keating discussed ancient Egyptian religious practices, comparing their primary religious text to other historical traditions. The host referred to the Book of the Dead as the spiritual bible of ancient Egypt, contrasting its focus on the afterlife and funerary rites with the Jewish Torah, which they characterized as a book of life. Both podcast segments utilized the title to explore comparative religion, ancient human history, and the distinct ways different civilizations conceptualized mortality, the soul, and the divine across historical epochs.
