Why people recommend it
Blood and Thunder by Hampton Sides is an epic historical account detailing the American West, centring heavily on the life of Kit Carson and the turbulent conflicts involving Native American populations during the nineteenth century. The book received significant attention across multiple episodes of The Joe Rogan Experience. Joe Rogan discussed reading the work while reflecting on the heavy themes of violence, historical interactions, and hostilities between settlers and Native Americans, describing it as part of his reading journey into Native American history. Mike Baker also recommended the book during an appearance on the show while exploring the history of the American frontier alongside Carson. Similarly, Bryan Callen brought up the publication to explore the brutal history, wars, and mountain exploits associated with the American West, noting it as a compelling epic tale. S.C. Gwynne joined the conversation to endorse the text as a strong read that had been published shortly before his own work. Across these discussions, the speakers repeatedly highlighted the title as an essential and gripping exploration of frontier history, prompting Rogan to express interest in inviting the author onto the programme to discuss the historical research further.
