Why people recommend it
Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel is a contemporary novel that follows a haunted medium named Alison Hart who tours the circuit of fairs and psychic evenings while tormented by the lingering presence of a disturbing past and a coterie of unruly ghosts. On The Book Review podcast episode titled The Definition of Adulthood, broadcast on July 18, 2024, Greg Cowles discussed various literary works during the program. During the episode, Cowles shared his enthusiasm for Hilary Mantel's bibliography, noting that he also liked her novel Beyond Black. He described the book as a much more contemporary novel centered on a psychic character who finds herself kind of haunted by a whole crew of ghosts. Cowles's remarks highlighted Mantel's versatility as a writer, moving beyond her famous historical fiction to examine the uncanny, darkly comic elements of modern British life. Through his brief review, listeners were reminded of the author's unique narrative voice and her ability to blend mundane realism with supernatural dread, offering a compelling reason to explore this lesser-discussed entry in Mantel's celebrated career as one of contemporary literature's most distinctive and accomplished voices.
