I am here to talk about American Scoundrel by Kybird and Susan Goldmark.
The best things said about it
I've read a book on Roy Conn. It's called I think American scoundrel which was a really good book by Ky Bird who previous wrote a book on Robert Oppenheimer that won the Pulit surprise.
David Rubenstein My First Million · Sep 2026 Why people recommend it
American Scoundrel by Kai Bird and Susan Goldmark is a compelling biographical work exploring the life and career of the notorious American lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn. On The Book Review episode titled It’s Time for a Big Ol’ Fall Book Preview, Gilbert Cruz introduced and recommended the biography to listeners, highlighting its depth and engaging narrative style. Later, David Rubenstein discussed reading the book on My First Million during the episode titled David Rubenstein: We took $5M and turned it into $500B, where he reflected on his reading habits regarding historical figures and noted that the biography was a truly excellent read crafted by Kai Bird, whom he also commended for previously writing a Pulitzer Prize-winning book on Robert Oppenheimer. Both podcast appearances underscored the enduring fascination with Roy Cohn's controversial political influence and legal maneuvering, demonstrating how Bird and Goldmark's thoroughly researched biography successfully captures the complex, shadowy mechanics of twentieth-century American power politics through the lens of one of its most notorious historical operatives.
