Why people recommend it
A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal by Ben Macintyre is a gripping historical non-fiction book that details the life and betrayal of the notorious British double agent Kim Philby and his association with the Cambridge Five spy ring. On Stuff You Should Know, Josh Clark enthusiastically recommended the title to listeners during an episode introduction, echoing a shout-out requested by Dave. On The Book Review, Jennifer Szalai discussed starting the book during a roundtable segment, sharing that she found it amazing after reading just the first fifty pages. Other hosts on the same podcast referenced the work in broader discussions of the author's bibliography; Gilbert Cruz brought it up when welcoming guests who had discussed it previously, and Pamela Paul explicitly stated that among the various books by Ben Macintyre she had read, this specific title remained her personal favorite. The widespread acclaim highlighted on these podcasts underscores the book's enduring appeal as a masterclass in narrative espionage history.
