Why people recommend it
A fan's notes by Frederick Exley is a semi-autobiographical novel that blends fiction and memoir to explore the author's struggles with alcoholism, mental illness, and societal expectations. Jay McInerney appeared on The Megyn Kelly Show in an episode titled Nine Books Every Dad Needs This Father's Day - Dedicated with Doug Brunt Special, broadcast in June 2025, where he recommended Frederick Exley's work as his second book choice, noting that it belongs to quite a different genre if it can be considered a genre at all. Additionally, Greg Cowles discussed the book on The Book Review in July 2024 during an episode featuring Amy Klobuchar on Antitrust. Cowles mentioned that he was currently reading the autobiographical novel and remarked on the author's humorous and put-upon grandiosity. Both commentators highlighted the unique, difficult-to-categorize nature of Exley's writing and the strong impression it leaves on readers navigating its distinct literary style and deeply personal subject matter, making it a recurring point of interest for literary discussions and personal recommendations across different podcast platforms.
